THERE was once a time when the PE teacher was a scruffy sort sheathed in a tracksuit, possessed of an irreverent deportment and a seemingly endless supply of roll-ups. His involvement in education failed to stretch much beyond explaining how best to maim an opponent or avoid the wrath of the opposite sex.
Sitting in the headmaster’s office at Calderglen High in East Kilbride, that image is proving difficult to reconcile with reality. The occupant, wearing a crisp shirt and neatly knotted tie, is perched on a chair at the other side of a shallow table, sipping coffee and charting his journey from the gymnasium to a position at the head of a sprawling 1700-pupil school.
Yet while Tony McDaid’s days teaching PE at various Glasgow secondaries are in the past, sport is occupying his present and giving him hope for the future.
As a former international basketball player, it was little surprise that the 41-year-old’s school was last month unveiled as the first in a series of Community Sports Hubs into which sportscotland and the Scottish Government will inject pound(s)1.5m annually over the next five years.
In a concept staggering in its simplicity, Calderglen – as well as up to 10 other pilot venues – will be opened as a base for local clubs, enabling a link to be fostered in communities between school sport and after-school activity.
“It’s about people getting as much information and as much opportunity as possible to get involved in sport,” McDaid explains, gesturing at facilities that include a full-sized games hall, three gyms, a dance studio, floodlight artificial surface and two grass pitches.
“Maybe we’ve got a pupil with an interest, and maybe a club already exists, but the chance of making that connection, unless they know somebody, is slim and that could be the difference between falling in love with a sport for life or just walking away.”

So too with restrictions on private property, money, access to information, etc. The average person will not support spending money on this kind of regulation unless he is directly affected, which almost certainly puts him in a minority. Minorities get legislation passed by frightening politicians to do their bidding. If politicians can’t control or at least influence their constituents, they lose power.
There will need to be some advances in computer technology before all of this can come about. Most people think the highest use of computers is the huge mainframes that are run by large corporations, scientists and government agencies to manipulate vast amounts of data and control megalithic organizations.

In terms of the visual arts Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dal? and Joan Mir? are perhaps the more famous contemporary names. Their works, along with those of other masters, can be found in the various major art galleries throughout Spain: the Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen Bornemisza Museums (Madrid), the Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao) and Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (Barcelona) house many important examples from all periods.
